The top-selling game Angry Birds will be available in 3D to owners of a new LG phone, the Optimus 3D
Angry Birds, the hugely popular video game, will be available in 3D later this year.
The Optimus 3D phone will be the first to offer the game, makers LG said. It will, however, be an ‘upscaled’ version of the 2D version, rather than an entire new adventure. The game will be available from October.
Angry Birds centres around a group of birds being detonated to kill pigs who have stolen their eggs. Makers Rovio, the Finnish company behind the hugely popular game, has also said that it is looking at turning the company into “a major franchise that crosses over to other platforms — from TV shows and movies to toys and comic books”, according to the company’s chief executive Mikael Hed.
Talking to entertainment magazine Variety, Hed previously revealed that Rovio had been doing the rounds of the Hollywood movie studios in the hope that Angry Birds, which has been downloaded by iPhone and iPad users more than 6.5 million times, can be quickly turned into a film.
It has subsequently emerged that the firm will make the film in-house.
He also disclosed that the company has begun experimenting with telling the Angry Birds story through cartoons and hopes the characters can become popular toys. An Angry Birds trailer has been viewed on YouTube more than five million times.
A free version of the game, Angry Birds Lite has been downloaded 11 million times. The title became the top-selling paid app in the UK version of Apple’s App Store in February 2010.
